I created my original seascape for the PoArtry 2022 exhibition at the General Office Gallery in Stourbridge (15 – 30 October 2022).
The exhibition, ‘Hope’ was themed on ‘Hope Central’, a project created by Rick Sanders in 2021.
An answering machine was set up for people to record their messages of hope and a soundscape of the messages was created.
My inspiration came from listening to this soundscape.
I was immediately moved, inspired, uplifted and emotionally connected when I listened to the messages.
In my view it is a bold and original concept and in response I created this artwork.
The boat at the heart of my work is navigating a very heavy, unrelenting stormy sea.
I used charcoal to capture the vessel and the raging sea and then pastels to create a bright dawn sky on the horizon.
The black charcoal struggle of the seafarers is in sharp contrast to the pastel break of light and colour in the distance and the hope of calmer waters.
