The Storm – Charcoal and Pastel Seascape
I created this charcoal and pastel seascape for this year’s PoArtry 2022 exhibition at the General Office Gallery Stourbridge.
The theme for the exhibition is ‘Hope’.
Participating artists were asked to listen to a soundscape of messages of hope left on an answering machine as part of the Rick Sanders Hope Central 2022 project.
I was immediately moved, inspired, uplifted and emotionally connected when I listened to the Hope Central soundscape.
It is a bold and original concept and in response I have created this seascape.
The boat at the heart of my work is navigating a very heavy, unrelenting stormy sea.
I have used charcoal to capture the vessel and the raging sea and then pastels to create a bright dawn sky on the horizon.
The black charcoal struggle of the seafarers is in sharp contrast to the pastel break of light and colour in the distance and the hope of calmer waters.
PoArtry 2022 at the General Office Gallery in Stourbridge runs from 15 to 30 October 2022.
This is my third PoArtry experience. I love the concept which consistently challenges me to experiment, think and create very different works
